Brenda Novak for the Cure of Diabetes Box Sets Available for Preorder

For the last 10 years, Brenda Novak has spearheaded an incredible effort to raise money to support the efforts to find a cure for diabetes. Her annual auction and other efforts have raised over $2.4 million!

The auction is on a break this year, but the fundraising isn’t paused. Brenda has organized three box sets of stories—one thriller, one contemporary romance, and one hot contemporary—to continue the drive. They will be available for only a short time but can be preordered now. All the proceeds go to the Diabetes Research Institute.

Introducing Tiny Treats—a FREE Collection of Micro Stories!

Tiny Treats: A Holiday CollectionI am really excited to be part of a new collection of very very short stories, all set during an end-of-year holiday.

These stories are “micro” because they’re satisfying presentations of the most exciting moments at the beginning of a romance, and they can be read in just a few minutes. Perfect for this busy time of year!

Most are set at Christmastime, but there are several holidays represented. Most are contemporary, but some are paranormal or historical. Some are prequels or sequels or related to the author’s existing worlds. And all are wonderful! (And I wouldn’t say that if I hadn’t genuinely enjoyed every single one.

The collection is COMPLETELY FREE anywhere e-books are sold. Get direct links to the retailers here.

And happy holidays! However many of them you celebrate. 🙂

Renegade Reissued

Renegade coverI’ve just reissued one of my favorite novellas!

Check it out on the Renegade page.

This is a rare foray into true menage territory. I confess to liking a good romantic triangle, where all three parties are worthy of each other, but I don’t usually go the “sharing” route. This story does that, though there’s a two-person happy ending that I hope everyone will like. 🙂

Sunroper is a Prism Winner!

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner

I am so excited! On Thursday night, the Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal Romance Writers held their annual event, The Gathering, at the Romance Writers of America conference in San Antonio, Texas. They held the Prism awards ceremony, and Sunroper won in the Light Paranormal category! (The list of all winners should be posted here soon.)

To celebrate, here are six paragraphs from Sunroper.

Marley wrapped both hands around the mug to absorb the heat. There was only one way to answer that question. “I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not.”

He said it with such compassion and lack of judgment that she blinked back tears, tilting her head to stare at the shadowed ceiling as if it had the power to keep the emotion at bay.

“It’s okay to be sorry he’s gone.”

It was the perfect summation of everything she’d been analyzing a few minutes ago, and it broke her. She leaned to set the almost-empty mug on the nightstand and covered her face with her hands, suppressed sobs racking her body.

Gage’s fingers wrapped around her upper arms. He pulled her into his lap, settling her effortlessly and cradling her against his chest. He even rocked her. Marley’s sob turned into a giggle, a sound she hadn’t made in years.

Here’s the blurb:

Eighteen-year-old Roxie Sebastian lives a charmed life, and she knows it. Too bad she can’t feel it. All her life, she’s felt disconnected from the world around her. Everything changes just before graduation, when she’s drawn to an eerie, brilliant light—which narrowly misses her as it blows up her friend Lincoln’s car. Clearly someone’s after Roxie, and finally Lincoln tells her the truth: He and Roxie are angels, beings from another dimension, and that light is her soul, separated from her human body in a traumatic birth.

Once a skeptical Roxie rules out the other possibilities—like Lincoln created this delusion to escape his abusive father—she accepts her gut-deep knowledge of the truth. But someone has been screwing with her light, using it to commit crimes, and their actions are about to cause irreparable damage to two worlds: the one she lives in, and the one she can’t remember.

Aided by her best friend Jordan, her boyfriend Tucker, and Lincoln, Roxie tracks down the criminal and uncovers many more secrets not only of her past, but of the history of their race on Earth. And then Roxie faces a horrible dilemma—the only way she can stop them from ripping apart both worlds is to fuse with her light…which could be tainted by the evil with which it was used.

Idiot. It’s like one of those crocotta things from that supernatural show, luring you away so it can eat you. I ignored myself, too. I had to know what that light was. It was the answer to everything. A hard core of anticipation formed in the center of my body, and I moved faster, more purposefully. I wanted that light. I had to have it, like a jilted co-ed has to have ice cream. If I didn’t get it, I would die. Lincoln called my name from very far away. He was scared. I wanted to tell him it was okay, but my voice didn’t work. My eyes burned, dry, but I couldn’t blink my eyelids.

Then something hit me, hard, but rolled in midair so I landed on it instead of the blacktop. Before we landed, that light, the same but different, streaked over my head, missing me by inches.

“What the he—”

Lincoln had tackled me better than the Patriots’ star safety could have. He rolled again so he covered me as the world lit up—red, gold, black—and roared. The ground shook under me, the sky wiggled above, and my ears had been stuffed with cotton. Everything slowed, got sluggish, but my brain processed what was happening. I had a direct line of sight under Linc’s arm, to the blazing ball of fire that had been his Firebird.

My lungs managed to suck in the air Linc had knocked out of them, and with air came chaos. From shoulders to ankles, I hurt from the impact of his tackle. My eardrums cringed from the noise, which, if I concentrated, I could tell was a mix of roaring fire, sirens, and screams/shouts, probably from people who’d been in the pro shop or Hall. My eyes felt seared by the light that had zoomed past, not nearly so seductive and friendly as it had seemed at first.

I didn’t want to ask. But I had to. “What the hell was that?”

Sunroper Finals in the 2014 Prism Awards

Sunroper CoverYesterday I was surprised and delighted to receive notice that the third book in my Goddesses Rising series, Sunroper, is a finalist in the 2014 Prism Awards Light Paranormal/Urban Fantasy category!

The Prism awards are sponsored each year by Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal Romance Writers, a special interest chapter of Romance Writers of America. The Prism is their published works contest and includes the following categories: Dark Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Fantasy, Futuristic, Light Paranormal/Urban Fantasy, Novella, Adult.

I am so very honored and excited to have finaled in this contest. When I first wrote Sunroper, I knew what I wanted the story to be, but I didn’t even come close to achieving it. Kerri-Leigh Grady offered preliminary thoughts on the book’s issues, and Danielle Poiesz, as she had done with Heavy Metal, provided me with a detailed map for reversing all the bad stuff and achieving that vision. She helped me with the hardest part of starting the third book in a series: the backstory! Finding the balance between boring people who’d just read the previous books and educating those who haven’t read them at all is nigh impossible. First I underwrote, and then I overwrote, and then Danielle wielded her sword (aka red pen) and got it just right. After that, she explained how I’d missed the mark on motivation, emotional intensity, and story logic. I literally rewrote half the book, and she encouraged me every step of the way. She never lost her cool, calm, optimistic demeanor, even when deadlines got crazy and despite the shocking start. I mean, I imagined her storming around her office tearing her hair out after she read it the first time. LOL But somehow, she saw my vision and infused it with the ingredients necessary to manifest it.

We readers like to imagine our favorite authors spinning a perfect story right from the get-go, because we only get to see the finished product that dazzles us. But this nomination is proof that a partnership with editors like Danielle can create true magic. My gratitude to her and to the rest of the team at Entangled Publishing knows no bounds.

The full list of finalists can be found here. Winners will be announced at The Gathering in San Antonio in July.

Upcoming in Damschroder-land

Cover of Harte and SoulHey, everybody!

Have you ever been in the middle of a really good book and, eager to know if the next one is available (or when the next one will be out, or if there even is a next one) and gone to the author’s website to find out only to discover that the author hasn’t updated her site in a year and is still announcing the release of the book you’re in the middle of reading?

Yeah, I hate that.

And yet, I’m kind of one of them! And I apologize wholeheartedly. This post is to bring you up to date on what’s going on so you won’t be frustrated.

First and most importantly! I’ve had a few inquiries about Harte and Soul. I really did not intend for it to take so long to get this book written and published. But 2013 was fanatastically packed, and I spent all my time working with my editors to get four other books published. And then I was burned out.

I bet you hate it when authors say that, too.

But it’s true. We only have so much creative energy, and the stress of back-to-back deadlines sucks it dry pretty quickly. And then I had a surge of freelance work that took all my time once the deadlines were over, which made it hard to get back to writing. (You can help cure that problem. I won’t have to do so much freelance work if more people buy my novels! 🙂 )

But I’m very happy to say that I’m actively working on Harte and Soul and while I don’t have a release date to give you, it should be sooner rather than later. You can sign up for my newsletter if you want to be sure you know when it’s released. I promise, I only send newsletters when I have Really Big News. So, way less than once a month. 🙂

Harte and Soul‘s hero is Peter Ranger, who featured prominently in the first book, Soul of the Dragon. Peter is all grown up now and living his dreams. Kind of. He has the company he wanted, but now he’s a widower with a young daughter who can talk to animals. Her abilities may be bigger than that, so Alexa calls in Brooklyne Harte, who works for ARPEP, the Agency for the Registration and Protection of Extraordinary People. It’s her job to find out if people like Kiena have abilities that can be useful or put them at risk. ARPEP got a big boost after the Pike Laurent situation in Soulflight and has been busy helping people like Celebrity Reuhl (one of the abductees). But Alexa insists on Brook being undercover, and Brook hates lies and secrets. So there isn’t a great foundation for a relationship between her and Peter, especially when they discover that Kiena’s abilities are absolutely huge, and so is the threat against her.

Watch this space over the next few weeks. I might be inclined to post short excerpts to whet your appetite. 🙂 New to the Soul Series? Start with Soul of the Dragon. Already read it as well as Soulflight? If you liked those, you’ll probably enjoy my Goddesses Rising trilogy. They’re very much the same kinds of books—adventurous and romantic with hot snarky heroes and very strong women.

Okay, what else is going on? I have a six-title series of novellas that I hope to start releasing later this year. I will write them all first, I promise, so there won’t be a long wait to worry about. They’re contemporary romances (no paranormal or suspense elements) with a fun central premise. This series will give me a way to explore some stories I’ve been dying to write but that might not be sufficient for full-length novels.

I also have some backlist titles I’ll be refreshing and re-releasing. Those will be well marked as such, so you won’t be fooled into getting something you’ve already read.

OH! Yeah, I almost forgot. The third book of my Carina Press romantic adventures, Acceptable Risks, will be out in mass market paperback in June. Check out the book page for links. I’ll be hosting some Goodreads giveaways of all three paperbacks (signed copies, of course!) off and on for the rest of the year, so keep an eye out for those, too.

Okay, that should do it! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you’d like to chat about any of my books. Find me on Facebook and Twitter if you’re a social type. I love getting new reviews, especially for books that have been out for a while, so thank you if you’re inclined to post reviews (even if you don’t like the book!). And if you’re the kind of reader who just likes to sink into a book and pretend nothing else exists, that’s a-okay! I thank you most of all. 🙂

Happy Spring!
