Kira's Best Friend

Kira MacGregor left the boredom of Brook Hollow for the excitement of Boston long ago.  She always thought nothing would drag her back—until her best friend, Jake McKenna, learns he’s dying.

Jake has loved Kira all their lives, and has waited in vain for her to settle down and return to Brook Hollow, the town he loves.  Afraid he’s dying of cancer, he confesses this love; but the mole was precancerous, and Kira doesn’t love him back.

Or so she thinks.  Drawn home for what she intends to be a temporary extended stay, Kira faces her altered relationship with Jake and the knowledge that she does love him.  Unfortunately, understanding comes too late.  He’s about to be married.

About the book:

I love best friend stories, and I love conundrums. Kira's Best Friend was born from one question:  What happens if your best friend loves you, and you don't love him back—until you tell him that, and then you do, but he's moved on.  I wrote this book after my second child was born, and her cousin three days before her.  My other sister-in-law was pregnant at that time, too, so this book was dedicated to all three of them.

Reviews:

"Ms. Damschroder has written an outstanding example of a profound tale of love and kindred souls. The brilliant wording and flowing storyline is breathtaking. The dialogue has the timeless cohesion that binds this story of devotion together. Ms. Damschroder personifies what a magnificent writer can create when they put pen to paper! Ms. Damschroder turned a delicate subject into a masterpiece. This reader will be waiting to open her heart and mind to the next installment of that Brook Hollow trilogy, called Sophie’s Playboy.  This book is a flawless five cups and a keeper for this reviewer!"

"I loved losing myself in this book.  Natalie J. Damschroder creates a fascinating plot by combining the small town atmosphere with the idea of lifelong friends with a cancer scare... Both Jake and Kira are heart-touching to read about, and Darcy is one of those perfect ‘bad guys’ that you love to hate."

“In the beginning this seems like an old-fashioned romance of love almost found, lost and then found again. But actually, there are quite a few twists and turns here. Some made me shake my head and roll my eyes at the characters, and others made me laugh.

The author also weaved into this story some very important and real issues that are faced in our modern world, such as ambition and deceit. Also how at times we follow a path that others have told us is the right way, instead of looking inside and following the path that will make us happy.

And that makes this story much more than “old-fashioned,” and one that should – and will be – enjoyed.”
